Ocracoke Island is the southernmost island of the Outer Banks and is accessible only from the north and west via ferry. The area is a truly untouched gem and is referred to as the "Pearl of the Outer Banks".
Ocracoke is steeped in history with references to Blackbeard and due to it being a strategic point of entry into the Pamlico Sound during the Revolutionary and Civil wars.
There are many vacation homes on Ocracoke and close to 250 historic structures remain in Ocracoke village.
Origin of the name - it is believed that the name is derived from a Native American word "Wokokon" and it is thought that eventually the "W" was dropped to evolve the word to the present day Ocracoke.
