Dog Friendly Beaches

The shear joy of watching your dog run along a sandy beach and playing in the surf is next to heaven and the beaches of the Outer Banks provide a wonderland for you and your best friend. The beauty of the Outer Banks is a matter of pride for those who live here and a reason for guests to return year after year.  Always be courteous and clean up after your pet. Collection and prompt disposal of your pets waste is expected.

The list below will help with you find the perfect ocean side playground for your dog, but please check with the National Parks Service to be up to date on any changes to their policies. 


  • Unleashed is allowed, but close proximity and eye contact is expected.
  • The beach accesses are privately owned by individual Home Owners Associations. 

Kitty Hawk

  • Current rabies tag must be displayed at all times.
  • Owner is responsible for removal of waste and possession of bag or container for waste at all times. 
  • From 10am to 6pm, dogs must be on a leash not exceeding 12ft. This is in effect from the Friday before Memorial Day until the day after Labor Day. 
  • If owner remains within 30ft of their dog then the dog may go unleashed, as long as it is not disturbing other beach patrons. The owner should be in control of their dog and carry their leash at all times.

Southern Shores

  • May15th until September 15th dogs are allowed on the beach before 9am and after 6pm.
  • Leash laws are all year round.
  • Leashes must be no longer than 10ft.
  • Prompt waste pick up and disposal by owner is expected.
  • Above rules apply to all other hours in the off-season.

Kill Devil Hills

  • Dogs are allowed on the beach before 9am and after 6pm from Memorial Day to Labor Day. (aid dogs are exempt)
  • When permitted, dogs must be on leash and under control. 

Nags Head

  • Year round permission for dogs on the beach as long as they are on a leash no longer than 10ft.


  • Year round permission for dogs on the beach.
  • Dogs must remain on leash.
